Sir Max Hastings
12 pm, The Beacon. Adult £14. Student/Under 14 £8

Sir Max Hastings will be discussing his latest book titled "Operation Biting," which delves into one of the most riveting British commando missions of World War II, arguably the most triumphant.

In February 1942, the RAF found itself confounded by a newly discovered radar network, dubbed Würzburg, along the Nazi-occupied European coastline. Dr. R.V. Jones, a brilliant scientist, suggested an audacious assault to seize crucial components of this network. The target identified was a German radar station perched on a cliff in Bruneval, Normandy. Winston Churchill and Lord Louis Mountbatten, head of Combined Operations, embraced the idea enthusiastically. A contingent from the recently formed Airborne Forces was tasked with executing the operation, which unfolded on the night of February 27th and 28th.

Despite harsh snowfall, 120 men landed, with some dropped off nearly two miles from their intended target.

Undeterred, they pressed forward, dismantled the German radar, engaged in a fierce battle with Wehrmacht defenders, and narrowly escaped by landing craft across tumultuous seas to Portsmouth after three intense hours in France.

Sir Max Hastings meticulously retells this captivating story, exploring previously undiscovered intricacies.
